5-HTP: 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an intermediate in the natural synthesis of the essential amino acid, tryptophan, to serotonin. The enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase adds a hydroxyl group (OH) to tryptophan, forming the 5-HTP intermediate. In the body, it converts to serotonin with the removal of a carboxyl group (COOH) by a second enzyme. Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter involved in the regulation of endocrine and brain activity responsible for emotion, appetite and sleep/wake cycles. In clinical studies, administration of 5-HTP supported serotonin production. The 5-HTP supplied in this supplement is derived from the Griffonia simplicifolia plant.

Alpha Lipoic Acid: an exceptionally versatile nutrient; being both water and fat soluble, it is able to function in almost any part of the body. It is manufactured in the body, but often times not in the amounts necessary to perform its many functions. Alpha lipoic acid is a potent antioxidant which neutralizes harmful free radicals and enhances the activity of vitamins C and E. A key component of the metabolic process, alpha lipoic acid produces energy in muscles and directs calories into energy production. In addition, this powerful nutrient helps maintain healthy glucose metabolism, supports the nervous system and provides nutritional support for healthy liver function.

Betaine HCl Pepsin: gastric-juice components essential to the digestion of food and absorption of most nutrients. In particular, betaine HCl is necessary for adequate absorption of protein, calcium, vitamin B-12 and iron. The low pH of the stomach's hydrochloric acid destroys ingested bacteria and microorganisms. This formula can be beneficial for anyone seeking enhanced digestive function.

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs): the branched chain amino acids are leucine, isoleucine, and valine. These essential amino acids provide nutritional support for athletes and individuals seeking optimal lean muscle mass. Branched chain amino acids are unique in that they are not metabolized by the liver. BCAAs may play a role in athletic support by promoting muscle nitrogen, enhancing alanine and glutamine production, decreasing lactate production and boosting energy while attenuating protein breakdown These actions help to sustain muscle work capacity and recovery. Studies have reported that post-exercise protein intake helps to enhance the repair of muscle protein. Additionally, some research has suggested that BCAAs may moderate the progression of central nervous system fatigue during exercise, supporting mental performance.

Calcium (Citrate/Malate): multiple randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled studies have reported statistically significant positive results using calcium supplementation to help reduce the risk of osteoporosis for both women and men. Calcium has also demonstrated the ability to provide a supportive effect on cardiovascular health by promoting healthy receptor function and healthy lipid metabolism. Additionally, calcium has been associated with supporting distal colon health.

DHEA: short for "dehydroepiandrosterone," DHEA is the most abundant adrenal steroid hormone in the body. After it is made by the adrenal glands, it travels into cells throughout the body where it is converted into androgens and estrogens. These hormones regulate fat and mineral metabolism, endocrine and reproductive function, and energy levels. The amount of each hormone that DHEA converts to depends on an individual's biochemistry, age, and sex. DHEA levels peak around age 25 and then decline steadily. DHEA supplementation has been associated with increased emotional well-being and immune function.

EPA/DHA Essentials: an ultra-pure, molecularly distilled fish oil concentrate that has been tested for environmental contaminants (heavy metals, PCBs, dioxins and furans), microbial contaminants, and oxidation and rancidity. It contains well below the strict limits for these criteria as established by the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), Europea Pharmacoepeia (EP) and U.S. Pharmacoepeia (USP). EPA and DHA from fish oil promote cardiovascular health by supporting healthy triglyceride and lipid metabolism, maintaining healthy blood flow, and supporting healthy platelet function. Fish oil is also important for optimal joint function. It maintains healthy prostaglandin and leukotriene production, which is important for maintaining connective tissue health and comfort. Furthermore, omega-3 fatty acids are important components of neuronal cell membranes and are essential to cognitive function. By supporting vascular health, fish oils promote oxygen and nutrient delivery to the brain. Studies suggest that healthy red blood cell membrane omega-3 fatty acid concentration is associated with emotional well-being. Both epidemiological and double blind placebo- controlled trials indicate that fish oil supports positive mood.

L-Lysine: an essential amino acid, l-lysine cannot be manufactured by the body and must be obtained from the diet. It is primarily noted for its importance in healthy protein synthesis, nitrogen balance and immune function. L-Lysine provides nutritional support for the body’s natural defenses, which includes maintaining healthy gum and lip tissue. It is produced from the fermentation of grain.

Taurine: the most abundant free amino acid in the brain, heart, and nervous system, and it plays a role in the healthy functioning of the brain, heart, gallbladder, eyes, and vascular system. It facilitates the passage of sodium, potassium, and, possibly, calcium and magnesium ions into and out of cells, and electrically stabilizes cell membranes. It maintains healthy camp activity, which activates important enzymes in the heart muscle, and contributes to the muscle's contractibility. Taurine is an important component of bile acids, which aid in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. It aids the body's chemistry by detoxifying harmful chemicals. Dietary taurine promotes the formation of taurocholate, a substance which increases cholesterol secretion in the bile and also supports fat metabolism in the liver.
